Quicktime/itune update beware
I turned on my pc this morning and there above the start menu was the little “new program installed” bubble.
WTF says I to myself, I haven’t installed a new program on my laptop for ages - so off I went to investigate.
There proudly sitting on the desktop was a the ‘Safari’ icon.
SAFARI!?
Yesterday there was an apple update for quicktime, and I’d just clicked ok, ok, ok, not noticing there was a little extra this time around with a check already in the box. I really hate that - remember the flash update that came with yahoo toolbar already checked?
An Apple representative issued an e-mailed statement on the matter to Information Week: “We are using Software Update to make it easy and convenient for both Mac and Windows users to get the latest Safari update from Apple.”
Bullshit! You’re trying to sneak a piece of software onto machines in an attempt to get a bigger part of the browser market. I’m pretty computer savvy but ya got me because I was expecting just the UPDATE.
Updates shouldn’t be bundled with a new program. If they want to ethically push their browser, after the quicktime update they should have had a message “safari internet browser is now available for windows, would you like to download and install it”. It just isn’t right! Apple banked on people not paying attention since the check is already in there, and I fell right into the trap.
