ICE on a card

Posted on Thursday, August 4th, 2005 at 10:26 am

The first time I heard about putting an ICE (in case of emergency) entry in a cell phone, I thought about “What if my cell gets run over by a truck” ? Then the silly chain letter started hitting everyones inbox and I still wasn’t convinced.

Have you ever seen the size of a cell phone manual? Of course you have – how long does it take you to figure out how to put entries in, edit entires then find them once you saved them in your contact list? Ok, for some maybe ten minutes – but think about this, do you really want some paramedic stood on the sidelines trying to figure out how in hell to retrieve your contact list on your cell phone instead of administering cpr to you? And what about those of us who ‘lock’ the phone when not in use? They’re not going to know the unlock code so the ICE idea is really useless for me.

Take a tip from Mary , Write it all down in on a little card and store it in your wallet, because that’s the first place the cops/paramedics and hospital staff are going to look when they need to contact your loved one.

I always thought that people putting that sort of information into their cellphone made sense. After all, the most likely folks to do it would be the ones that had the phone next to their head when they died.

I found a cellphone in our office parking lot earlier this summer. It had no identifying information in or on it, but there was one number in the contact list: HOME. I called it, left a message and later that day the cellphone rang. She came to pick it up, very happy that I had found it.

My problem with this ICE thing is whether or not the paramedics know to look for this listing in the cell phone. Did this email forward start at the paramedics’ offices? I’m doubting that.

I doubt the e-mail originated from any official source, although it was originally thought up by a paramedic in the uk after the July 7th bombings.

I’ve always carried a card in my wallet with a list of about 10 contacts, my blood type, address etc, it’s connected to my license with a paper clip.

JR’s comment cracked me up! :)

I like Valette’s idea of putting a “home” listing in case the cell phone is lost and a bystander picks it up. Wouldn’t work for me because my cell phone is my only phone, but it would work for some people. :)

I think we should all tattoo our ICE numbers on our foreheads. That would save a lot of time, wouldn’t it? Mind you, I’ve wondered how it would help unless you also store your own details somewhere.

“Hello, this is Paramedic Pete. We’re ringing you because this number’s stored as an ICE number on someone’s … what’s that? Who? Um. We don’t know.”

The original idea, incidentally, originated from this neck of the woods.

I have my ICE right on the main display. I didn’t know until recently you could edit that main display stuff. Also my phonebook is pretty simple. Just one and in alphabetical order. It says right beside the name if they are family, friend or business.

    There’s hope!
(I still carry my little card with me in my wallet too! *wink )
