Don’t call me bad names

Kasia has an interesting post concerning a letter received from cydoor about what they would prefer their spyware software to be called.

Apparently idownload and isearch don’t like to be called spyware or malware either, and are currently sending cease and desist letters to those who refer to them as such.

Since I didn’t have my early morning paper early enough this morning, I decided to catch up on all the recent updates and followed links. Now it seems we have the “delisting” of programs we’ve come to know as nefarious annoyingware.

Lavasoft’s response and an in depth look from a user.

Personally I think the criteria is simple. Users don’t want ANY software on their pc which advertizes by popups or sends information about which sites they visit. We don’t like tv ads either, that’s why some turn to tivo or go make a sandwich during commercial breaks. Let’s face it, the average user knows nothing about these things, and how am I suppose to clean up these pc’s if I don’t have the proper tools at my disposal.

If we can’t rely on software like adaware and the like to detect and remove such things from our pc, who can we rely on?
